Mitral Valve Repair

Mitral Valve Repair vs. Replacement

Compared to national averages, patients in Central and Eastern Oregon who have a faulty mitral valve in their heart are twice as likely to have their own valve repaired as to have a replacement valve put in. Nationally, only one-third of mitral valves are repaired. Thanks to highly specialized training, surgeons at St. Charles are able to successfully repair two-thirds of mitral valves. Patient benefits include fewer complications, better long-term heart function, and elimination of the need for long-term use of blood thinning drugs. While this frequency of successful valve repair is relatively uncommon elsewhere in the country, it is standard practice at St. Charles. Mitral valve repair contributes to better patient outcomes and our medical community's overall reputation as a leader in heart care.
