Statins

Beyond Statins

Cardiologists and primary care physicians in Bend are using drugs in addition to statins to treat some lipid problems. Guided by the information provided by electron beam tomography (EBT) coronary calcium scanning, physicians in Central Oregon identify patients who are either not helped or only partly treated by using statin drugs. This may occur in more than 30 percent of the population. This leading-edge approach to lipid management has been associated with a reduction in the number of heart attacks, angioplasties, and bypass surgeries among residents of Central Oregon at a time when population growth is among the fastest in the Northwest. Once again, innovative care fostered by research and education programs of the Heart Institute has led to better outcomes for the citizens of Central and Eastern Oregon.
