Student Found to Have WPW Syndrome
In a memorandum from Margaret Sturza, Madras High School Athletic Director, Sturza thanked the Heart Institute of the Cascades for testing 181 students from Madras and Culver High Schools February 27-28, 2006. "The nurses and [ekg/echo] techs that tested the students were very professional and caring with the students," Sturza said. Most notably, one student, a very active varsity athlete, was found to have Wolff (Wolfe)-Parkinson-White (WPW) Syndrome, which can cause sudden death.  According to Sturza, "neither the student nor his parents had any idea that he had anything wrong with his heart. The day following the screening, the student saw a cardiologist, and the day after was at OHSU for a corrective procedure." Best of all, reported Sturza, "he is now back competing. Everyone at Madras High School is so thankful for the Heart Institute of the Cascades and their sponsorship of the program. We all believe it may have saved a life."
